What is Worldbuilding?

Worldbuilding is the process of constructing imaginary worlds. This can include inventing new creatures, characters, environments, cultures, stories and histories. Worldbuilding exists in video games, tabletop games, tv shows, films, books and other popular culture.

Worldbuilding is a large part of our lives. It provides escapism, a way to understand our experiences and to empathise with others, and it grows our imaginations, ambitions and emotions.

We focus on soft worldbuilding and the methods to make more flexible worlds driven by themes, emotions and atmosphere. Personally we love this approach, and it’s a great way to start your worldbuilding journey. It allows you to find and try all sorts of ideas without any rules, and to figure out what you like and don’t like. What you create can be used in both soft and hard worldbuilding, like roleplaying games, larp, comics, written stories and cosplay.

Our Quest

Take risks, make mistakes, and do it your way.

We believe failure, risk-taking and independent thinking and making are vital skills for all creative journeys. That's why our activities are designed to be open-ended and self-paced, allowing Guild Members to explore worldbuilding in their own way. Our quests serve as descriptive companions rather than rigid instructions, encouraging imaginative thinking and independent risk-taking.

Central to our approach is the cultivation of imagination, confidence, and effective communication. Through our carefully crafted resources, we create the perfect conditions for Guild Members to express their ideas, emotions, and ambitions. We place emphasis on developing a visual language and providing tools for constructing and comprehending rich and immersive worlds. The focus is not solely on predefined outcomes but rather on nurturing individual growth and expression.

Our Focus

In a world where extroversion and collaboration often take center stage, we specifically support introverted and neurodiverse adventurers with different learning styles. We’ve built a comfortable environment that supports introversion and independent study.

We believe creativity and innovation thrive through slow learning, space for introspection, and independent exploration. We embrace risk, cherish individuality, and empower Guild Members to shape their own creative worldbuilding journeys.

Our Founders

Jasmine O'Hare: I created the Wayward Adventurers Guild back in September 2020 to share the joy and excitement of making new worlds.

I've taught art, design and photography for over six years in schools, universities and independently. I loved it, but I wanted to share more of myself and my passions.

I love worldbuilding, but a lot of the time I find it overwhelming and intimidating. I'm terrible at in-depth Dungeons and Dragons campaigns and shy away from rule-heavy games for fear of getting it wrong, which is very common for me. I wanted to create a space for people to dabble in worldbuilding without rules and to find their way of doing it.

I write, illustrate and design all of the quests, with the help of my wonderful partner Ben.

Ben Robinson: I’ve played Dungeons and Dragons and larped for over 10 years, and I now help to write and design the quests and build props for events. It can be hard to find time to fully commit to big larps or complex tabletop games, and so we’re hoping our quests will be more manageable and less pressured.

Environment

We work hard to reduce our impact on the environment at each stage, and as we grow we will implement more effective measures. All of our packaging is recyclable and/or reusable, and we use a wonderful local printer Barkers Print. We will continue to search and use local and environmentally conscious manufacturers and suppliers.
